Reicheocactus bonnieae, TB 343.1, Loro Huasi, west of Fiambala, Catamarca, Argentina.
This is a very interesting miniature species from South America. It grows around 2000 m.a.s.l. in Argentina in gravel and weathered rock. The plant gets to about finger thick and long in size. The tap root is probably about twice as long as the plant is high.
The dark green body is almost covered in short, pectinate yellow-white spines. Beautiful yellow flowers appear in May-June. It is closely related to Reicheocactus famatimensis. Both species are more commonly seen described as either Lobivia or Echinopsis, but newer molecular research suggests that R. bonnieae and R. famatimensis both belong in the genus Reicheocactus, of which they are the only two species.
We recommend a mineral soil and deep pots to accomodate the long tap roots. They are not particularly difficult, but can be susceptible to overwatering.
20 seeds per packet. The seeds germinate well under normal conditions.
